In honor of
the late epileptologist Richard N. Rovner, MD, the Epilepsy Foundation of
Greater Chicago donated to Rush more than $40,000 in proceeds from recent gala
dinners, supporting the Richard N. Rovner Fund for Epilepsy Research. Rovner,
who spent 35 years at Northwestern before joining Rush for the last decade of
his career, died in 2009.
May, Rovner’s widow, Judge Ilana D. Rovner, and son, Max; Epilepsy Foundation
of Greater Chicago president and CEO Kurt Florian; several foundation board
members; friends of the Rovners; and Michael C. Smith, MD, director of Rush
University Medical Center's Epilepsy Center, gathered for a luncheon at Rush to
celebrate Rovner’s life and legacy — and thank the Epilepsy Foundation for its
foundation’s gift represents a link between Rovner’s two favorite institutions,
said his son, Max, a psychiatry resident at the University of Chicago.
According to Max, Rovner used to say that joining Rush was the second best
decision he’d ever made, after marrying Ilana, the first woman appointed to the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
also continues Smith’s push to fund a named chair at Rush in Rovner’s honor.
Smith’s mentor and friend “very much deserves it,” Smith said. “I miss him
sorely. He was one of the best epileptologists in the Chicago area.”
