For more than two decades, Rush has had strong teammates in the fight against women’s cancers.

The Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund honors the memory of the late Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo. Together with its funding partners NFL Charities and the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation and many individual donors, the Piccolo Fund provides critical support of cancer research at Rush. For 2014, the Piccolo Fund is supporting promising studies of a potential diagnostic marker for cervical cancer and investigation into a proton channel that may be a culprit in helping breast cancer cells to grow and multiply.

Additionally, Bears Care, the grant-making foundation of the Chicago Bears, has provided long-term support of breast cancer programs at Rush. Their generosity has helped underwrite costs of high-quality, lifesaving mammograms and diagnoses for hundreds of economically disadvantaged women. And Bears Care’s recent support of research projects by Andrew Zloza, MD, PhD; Deri Morgan, PhD; and Di Chen, PhD, may lead to more effective, targeted breast cancer treatments.
